Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust (SUHT) provides local hospital services to some 500,000 people living in Southampton and south Hampshire and specialist services such as neurosciences, cardiac services and children's intensive care to more than 3 million people in central southern England and the Channel Islands.
The Trust is also a major centre for teaching and research in association with the University of Southampton and partners including the Medical Research Council and Wellcome Trust.
In November SUHT was granted Exemplar status for delivery of thromboprophylaxis across the organisation. The trust was reviewed for its implementation of the national strategy for venous thromboembolism and consequently it's care of patients in VTE prevention.
The day went well and was a marker of how much we had achieved as an organisation since the publication of the Health committee select report in 2005. Achieving Exemplar status was a privilege for the organisation and a result of the dedication of the staff involved and their commitment to delivering excellence in patient care.
Work continues across the organisation, supported by the thrombosis committee to respond to changes in national practice and to action the results from the monthly VTE audit results to ensure practice is maintained.
