| The University Hospitals of Leicester Trust comprises 3 large acute hospitals in Leicester - the Royal Infirmary, General Hospital and Glenfield Hospital. The catchment area for our hospitals is around 1.1 million people. In 09/10 there were approximately 91,000 emergency admissions, 25,000 elective admissions, 735,000 outpatients, 10,600 deliveries and 78,000 day cases. A number of measures have been taken to ensure that the risk to patients of hospital acquired thrombosis is minimised and that acute thrombosis is managed to the highest standards and anti-coagulants are used safely. These measures include VTE risk assessment for all admissions and surgical day cases Development of Thromboprophylaxis Guidelines for Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics Improved patient awareness with verbal and written information Widespread education programme for junior doctors, nurses and pharmacists: Increased representation on the undergraduate curriculum and student examinations Rolling audit programmes using standard audit criteria, available electronically Prospective real-time data collection and monitoring of the incidence of hospital acquired thrombosis Root cause analysis and investigation of incidents Specialist out-patient DVT and PE services A comprehensive anti-coagulation policy comprising 25 documents providing information and guidance on all aspects of anti-coagulation therapy The Trust was designated a VTE Exemplar Centre in November 2009.
