Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust (Derriford Hospital) provides local hospital services to around 480,000 people in Plymouth, North and East Cornwall and South and West Devon. A large hospital with 1100 beds, Derriford hospital also provides tertiary cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery and renal and bone marrow transplants for the south west peninsula. The trust is developing rapidly as a centre for research in partnership with the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry and Plymouth and Exeter Universities. We received one of the first National Institute of Health Research grants in the south west and we are also a partner in the Peninsula Collaboration in Applied Health Research and Care (PenCLARHC). Pen CLARHC are currently researching VTE prophylaxis in medical admissions and orthopaedics comparing Plymouth with Truro. The Thrombosis committee at Plymouth has been in place since March 2006 with working groups to drive thromboprophylaxis in various disciplines. National recognition was first achieved with the prestigious ‘Hospital Doctor' award for VTE prophylaxis, in Orthopaedic patients, in 2007. Ongoing audit has continued to demonstrate reductions in VTE in these patients. Plymouth became an exemplar site for VTE risk prevention in December 2009, recognising the Orthopaedic success but also work undertaken in delivery of effective, hospital-wide thromboprophylaxis. An awareness day was held to mark this occasion with national and local speakers in attendance. Work is currently ongoing with the review of thromboprophylaxis policies in light of new national guidelines (NICE, CG 92) as well documenting risk assessment and developing patient information strategies. It is also proposed to hold a second VTE awareness day in November 2010.
