| NICE VTE prevention guidelines published January 23, 2010 The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has published guidance setting out how patients should be risk-assessed for VTE. VTE is an important cause of death in hospital patients, and treatment of non-fatal symptomatic VTE and related long-term morbidities is associated with considerable cost to the NHS. The risk depends on the condition and/or procedure for which the patient is admitted; the NICE guideline makes recommendations on assessing and reducing this risk in hospitalised patients in hospital and offers guidance on the most clinically and cost-effective measures for VTE prophylaxis in these patients. The recommendations take into account the potential risks of the various options for prophylaxis and patient preferences. This guideline updates NICE clinical guideline 46 on VTE prevention after surgery and replaces it.
