Dr Lara Roberts

MBBS MRCP FRCPath

Senior Clinical Research Fellow

Dr Roberts completed her initial medical training in Australia before relocating to the United Kingdom in 2002. She is currently undertaking a period of research prior to completing her haematology specialist training.

Her main research project is a prospective study of outcomes following a first deep vein thrombosis. The principal aims are to establish risk factors for the development of post-thrombotic syndrome and recurrent thrombosis, to evaluate ethnic variation in outcomes and to assess the impact of deep vein thrombosis on quality of life. Other research interests include the role of global coagulation assays in assessing the hypercoagulable state.

Pager for DVT referrals: 07699 115300 Call Sign 'DVT'

The nursing team of six coagulation nurse specialists provides leadership in the promotion and delivery of evidence-based nursing care for patients who are at risk of, or who have developed venous thromboembolism (VTE). The team, led by Lynda Bonner, plays a leading role in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of VTE, and in anticoagulation management.

The team plays a key role in driving forward the implementation of VTE risk assessment to ensure that 100% concordance becomes a reality. For those patients referred to our nurse-led clinic for rapid assessment of suspected DVT, they are usually seen on the day of referral. Following comprehensive assessment and diagnostic testing, those with confirmed DVT are assessed for outpatient management and then transferred directly to our anticoagulation service when appropriate. The anticoagulation clinic is a joint nurse/pharmacy clinic and caters for patients with any medical condition requiring anticoagulation. The team ensures that patients have blood tests regularly and that patients are safely and competently dosed under a ‘patient group direction'. Adherence to the National Patient Safety Agency recommendations for anticoagulation ensures that education and audit is a regular part of the nurse’s role. Quality of life (QOL) issues, including the prevention of post-thrombotic syndrome and ensuring continuity of care, form an important part of the nurses' role.
